I purchased and installed the UtiliTech Solar LED Security Flood Lights from Home Depot for around $40 (You can also purchase them here: https://amzn.to/2N75ObG ). I was hesitant on purchasing Solar lighting because, in the past, they did not work that well or only worked for short amounts of time due to limited battery size, using incandescent bulbs and improved circuitry and battery technology.
Today, solar lighting predominantly uses LED lights which require MUCH less power to run than the old incandescent flood lamps that were used with outdoor solar lighting. Battery technology has also improved by leaps and bounds. Today’s outdoor solar light will not illuminate your area for an entire night, but works well enough to brighten an area for a couple of minutes so that the area is not in complete darkness.
One of the main reasons that I purchased and installed this type of lighting fixture is due to the fact that it does not need to be hard-wired into my house and will continue to work, even in the event of a power failure.
You are done… Let the sun do the rest of the work for you.
The lighting fixture does exactly what I want it to do. It illuminates the side of my house for a couple of minute so that I am not walking in the pitch black darkness to my backyard.
If you are looking for a light fixture that you can leave on all night to illuminate an area, this is not the fixture for you. For that situation, you would most-likely need a hard-wired fixture. You would want to contact a licensed Electrician and consult with them on what your best options would be.
For me, I am very interested to see where the technology for Solar, Batteries and LED will be like in the future.
